In the warehouse industry, a lot of departments and moving pieces come together to deliver goods from Point A to Point B. But the last stop along the way is commonly referred to as last mile delivery, where goods and products are delivered from a transportation hub to the final destination.
What Does A Last Mile Delivery Driver Do?
The day-to-day responsibilities of a last mile delivery driver essentially involves transporting goods via dedicated non-commercial truck, delivery van, or personal vehicle. Some last mile delivery drivers simply deliver parcels to personal residences, which may require the ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Others in more specific last mile roles, such as appliances or furniture delivery, may involve assembly and installation in customers’ homes.
How To Become A Last Mile Driver
To become a last mile delivery driver, the first requirement is a valid driver’s license, and in almost all cases a safe driving record. Some delivery drivers are required to be 18 years or older, while other positions are looking for drivers at least 21 years old. A high school degree or GED equivalent is typically preferred, but not always required.
Driver Pay And Shift Schedule
Last mile delivery drivers are often well compensated, with average pay ranging from $16-$25 per hour in 2021 (indeed.com). Some last mile drivers work part-time, but many are full-time employees, which often comes with paid vacation time, benefits, and scheduling flexibility. As is the case with most every job, experience is preferred, but not always required.
Most of these drivers work Monday through Friday, but some can work on the weekends, as well. Typically, drivers work around 8-10 hour shifts, but that will vary depending on industry and employer.
Requirements At Work
In select cases, a background check and drug screen will be a requirement, but that will vary based on state and/or hiring company.
To be a successful last mile delivery driver, one must be a safe driver in all weather conditions, possess a strong work ethic, and maintain a friendly, professional communication style. Delivering items on time, in quality condition, with professionalism in customer interactions are all an extension of good service.
