Different Types of Amazon Warehouses
Fulfillment & Distribution Centers - According to Amazon, they currently have over 175 fulfillment centers in operation globally. The major concentration of these warehouses is in North America, where over 110 are located. The fulfillment center warehouses range in size from 600,000 square feet to one million square feet, and combined they total over 150 million square feet of space. An Amazon fulfillment center encompasses the complete physical process of an amazon delivery, from inventory coming in from manufacturers to packages being shipped out directly to customers.
Sortation Centers - An Amazon sortation center is where associates prepare packages for last-mile delivery by the United States Postal Service. These sortation centers were first conceived in collaboration with the USPS to help Amazon provide customers with Sunday delivery. Amazon currently has sortation centers in at least 27 States across the U.S., Texas and California having the most with 4 each.
Jobs categorized as “in sortation” include a wide variety of positions from software development to operations manager and from area manager to process assistant.
Receiving Centers - Amazon receive centers supplement their fulfillment and distribution centers by receiving large orders of products that sell very fast. These high volume products are then distributed to the main fulfillment centers as needed. Types of jobs available at Amazon receiving centers include team member, forklift operator, and manager.
Delivery Stations - An Amazon delivery station is fed by the fulfillment center. At the delivery station customer orders are prepared for last-mile delivery to customers. The types of jobs available at delivery stations range from delivery associate to station manager.
Amazon Fresh - An Amazon Fresh warehouse can be standalone or located within one of their other warehouses. A Fresh warehouse is set up like a grocery store with sections and aisles, where the warehouse assisting and picker team members ‘go shopping’ to fulfill customer orders.
Specialty Centers - An amazon specialty center is a type of fulfillment center designed for specific item categories or for seasonal use during high traffic times. As such, many of the jobs available at specialty centers are seasonal but there is always opportunity for workers to transition into full time employment.
Quote from Amazon: “Why do we have all of these different buildings? We see the continued demand from customers for low prices and great selection, and we build capacity to support that demand.”
