Warehouse Order Selector Job Description

A warehouse order selector is responsible for accurately and safely selecting products for orders. This job entails reading orders and product labels, placing goods in the proper locations, and preparing orders for shipping. Order selectors must follow standard work procedures and sometimes they have to operate pallet jacks or forklifts to complete their job. An order selector job can be physically demanding and can include working in extreme temperatures such as in freezers.

Order Selector Responsibilities

The responsibilities of a warehouse order selector will vary depending on the type of warehouse they work, but common responsibilities include:

  • Follow standardized work methods, safety policies, and procedures.
  • Wear all required personal protective equipment and safety gear.
  • Ensure the work area is safe.
  • Read alpha and numeric codes.
  • Operate pallet jacks and forklifts to transport products.
  • Perform pre trip and post trip inspections on pallet jacks and forklifts.
  • Perform routine maintenance on pallet jacks and forklifts such as charging batteries.
  • Meet required productivity and accuracy standards.
  • Locate products according to order sheets and build orders according to company procedures.
  • Manually place stock items on single or double pallets from pick slots and racks.
  • Secure products on pallets.
  • Shrink-wrap pallets for staging.
  • Transport completed orders to the shipping dock staging area.
  • Secure all equipment and complete all necessary paperwork at the end of shift.

Order Selector Qualifications

All warehouses are not the same, but some common qualifications for getting a warehouse order selector job can include:

  • Be 18 years of age.
  • Have good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to stand, walk, reach and lift repeatedly throughout the shift.
  • Ability to lift, stack, and pull products off shelves of various heights.
  • Lift products weighing 10-50 pounds regularly. Some products may weigh even more.
  • Ability to work in multi-temperature environments (cooler, freezer, dry room).
  • Pass a drug test and criminal background check.
  • May be required to work overtime.
  • May need forklift certification.
